Senior Scientific Writer – Roles and Responsibilities

1. Scientific Writing and Publication Management

• Lead on the development, writing, editing and review of the scientific manuscripts, abstracts, posters and congress presentations.
• Independently manage the key publication deliverables (planning, submission, resubmission and timeline management).
• Develop scientific content covering complex clinical trials, pooled analyses, health economics and outcomes research (HEOR), and integrated evidence.
• Advise teams on publication scope, journal/congress selection and how to position the scientific narrative.
• Ensure scientific accuracy, clarity, logical flow, and compliance with journal and congress requirements.

2. Complex Data and Evidence Interpretation

• Lead publications involving integrated datasets, post-hoc analyses, network meta-analyses, conventional meta-analyses, HEOR and epidemiology.
• Work with biostatistics, clinical, safety, and medical teams to understand datasets and analytical methods.
• Reconcile the inconsistencies across data outputs, protocols, clinical study reports, product information and public disclosures.
• Translate complex scientific evidence into clear and accurate publications.

3. Literature Review and Evidence Synthesis

• Oversee systematic literature searches and evidence synthesis.
• Conduct evidence gap analyses to support publication planning and future disclosures.
• Maintain clear documentation, reference the appropriate libraries and ensure all citations are accurate.
• Ensure methodological rigour across scientific publications.

4. Journal and Congress Submissions

• Manage complex journal and congress submission packages.
• Prepare cover letters and responses to reviewer comments.
• Coordinate authorship confirmations, disclosures, and publication compliance checks.
• Get in touch with the journal’s editorial offices and congress secretariats if you have any questions relating to the submission.

5. Figures and Data Visualisation

• Define suitable data visualisation approaches for scientific publications.
• Guide the design partners through the development of complex scientific figures and layouts.
• Look at the forest plots, the Kaplan Meier curves, the heat maps and all the other graphical representations.
• Ensure the figures are accurate, legible, accessible and in line with brand requirements.

6. Publication Ethics and Compliance

• Ensure compliance with Good Publication Practice (GPP), ICMJE recommendations, AstraZeneca policy and therapeutic area guidance.
• Maintain appropriate authorship, acknowledgements, disclosures, transparency, and data integrity.
• Protect data confidentiality and data privacy.
• Identify and address potential publication ethics and compliance risks.

7. Project Leadership and Team Development

• Manage the schedules, resources, documentation and a number of different publication deliverables.
• Maintain audit-ready records in publication management systems.
• Conduct peer reviews and give other writers some real feedback.
• Mentor colleagues and support their training and development of capability.
• Collaborate with clinical development, medical affairs, biostatistics, HEOR, safety, regulatory teams, external authors, and other stakeholders.

8. AI and Digital Innovation

• Use AI and automation tools to enhance the development and delivery of scientific publications.
• Explore and implement suitable AI-supported solutions for literature synthesis, scientific writing, and quality control.
• Apply responsible AI practices including a critical assessment of the generated output for scientific accuracy and data confidentiality.
• Identify opportunities to improve the quality of publications, the efficiency of the process and the working processes.

• An advanced degree (e.g. PhD, MD, MPH or PharmD) and equivalent relevant experience.
• Recognised qualification in medical writing or medical communications.
• Certified Medical Publication Professional (CMPP) certification.
• Experience in managing integrated publications (pooled analyses, meta-analyses, HEOR, epidemiology etc).
• Experience of coordinating multi-author manuscripts through to journal acceptance.
• Experience in therapeutic areas such as:
